Generalizations of Clausen's formula and algebraic transformations of Calabi-Yau differential equations

2011

AbstractWe provide certain unusual generalizations of Clausen's and Orr's theorems for solutions of fourth-order and fifth-order generalized hypergeometric equations. As an application, we present several examples of algebraic transformations of Calabi–Yau differential equations.

COVARIANCE AND CORRELATION ESTIMATORS IN BIPARTITE SYSTEMS

2017

We present a weighted estimator of the covariance and correlation in bipartite complex systems with a double layer of heterogeneity. The advantage provided by the weighted estimators lies in the fact that the unweighted sample covariance and correlation can be shown to possess a bias. Indeed, such a bias affects real bipartite systems, and, for example, we report its effects on two empirical systems, one social and the other biological. On the contrary, our newly proposed weighted estimators remove the bias and are better suited to describe such systems.

Community characterization of heterogeneous complex systems

2011

We introduce an analytical statistical method to characterize the communities detected in heterogeneous complex systems. By posing a suitable null hypothesis, our method makes use of the hypergeometric distribution to assess the probability that a given property is over-expressed in the elements of a community with respect to all the elements of the investigated set. We apply our method to two specific complex networks, namely a network of world movies and a network of physics preprints. The characterization of the elements and of the communities is done in terms of languages and countries for the movie network and of journals and subject categories for papers. We find that our method is ab…

New Flexible Probability Distributions for Ranking Data

2015

Recently, several models have been proposed in literature for analyzing ranks assigned by people to some object. These models summarize the liking feeling for this object, possibly also with respect to a set of explanatory variables. Some recent works have suggested the use of the Shifted Binomial and of the Inverse Hypergeometric distribution for modelling the approval rate, while mixture models have been developed for taking into account the uncertainty of the ranking process. We propose two new probabilistic models, based on the Discrete Beta and the Shifted-Beta Binomial distributions, that ensure much flexibility and allow the joint modelling of the scale (approval rate) and the shape …

Arithmeticity of Four Hypergeometric Monodromy Groups Associated to Calabi–Yau Threefolds: Table 1.

2014

In [12], we show that three of the fourteen hypergeometric monodromy groups associated to Calabi-Yau threefolds are arithmetic. Brav-Thomas (in [3]) show that seven of the remaining eleven are thin. In this article, we settle the arithmeticity problem for the fourteen monodromy groups, by showing that, the remaining four are arithmetic.

Multidomain spectral method for the Gauss hypergeometric function

2018

International audience; We present a multidomain spectral approach for Fuchsian ordinary differential equations in the particular case of the hypergeometric equation. Our hybrid approach uses Frobenius’ method and Moebius transformations in the vicinity of each of the singular points of the hypergeometric equation, which leads to a natural decomposition of the real axis into domains. In each domain, solutions to the hypergeometric equation are constructed via the well-conditioned ultraspherical spectral method. The solutions are matched at the domain boundaries to lead to a solution which is analytic on the whole compactified real line R∪∞, except for the singular points and cuts of the Rie…

Encuestas a pie de urna en España. ¿Error muestral o sesgo de no respuesta?

2016

Countless examples of misleading forecasts on behalf of both pre-election and exit polls can be found all over the world. Non-representative samples due to differential nonresponse have been claimed as being the main reason for inaccurate exit-poll projections. In real inference problems, it is seldom possible to compare estimates and true values. Electoral forecasts are an exception. Comparisons between estimates and final outcomes can be carried out once votes have been tallied. In this paper, we examine the raw data collected in seven exit polls conducted in Spain and test the likelihood that the data collected in each sampled voting location can be considered as a random sample of actua…

Objective Priors for Discrete Parameter Spaces

2012

This article considers the development of objective prior distributions for discrete parameter spaces. Formal approaches to such development—such as the reference prior approach—often result in a constant prior for a discrete parameter, which is questionable for problems that exhibit certain types of structure. To take advantage of structure, this article proposes embedding the original problem in a continuous problem that preserves the structure, and then using standard reference prior theory to determine the appropriate objective prior. Four different possibilities for this embedding are explored, and applied to a population-size model, the hypergeometric distribution, the multivariate hy…

Stochastic ordering of classical discrete distributions

2010

For several pairs $(P,Q)$ of classical distributions on $\N_0$, we show that their stochastic ordering $P\leq_{st} Q$ can be characterized by their extreme tail ordering equivalent to $ P(\{k_\ast \})/Q(\{k_\ast\}) \le 1 \le \lim_{k\to k^\ast} P(\{k\})/Q(\{k\})$, with $k_\ast$ and $k^\ast$ denoting the minimum and the supremum of the support of $P+Q$, and with the limit to be read as $P(\{k^\ast\})/Q(\{k^\ast\})$ for $k^\ast$ finite. This includes in particular all pairs where $P$ and $Q$ are both binomial ($b_{n_1,p_1} \leq_{st} b_{n_2,p_2}$ if and only if $n_1\le n_2$ and $(1-p_1)^{n_1}\ge(1-p_2)^{n_2}$, or $p_1=0$), both negative binomial ($b^-_{r_1,p_1}\leq_{st} b^-_{r_2,p_2}$ if and on…
